Apex Legends is a free-to-play electronic game from the battle royale genre developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. Set in the same universe as the Titanfall series, the game was unveiled and released in a surprise announcement on February 4, 2019, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Apex Legends differs from other battle royale games by borrowing hero shooter concepts, with each player’s Legend having skills and unique skills, and especially requiring players to work in squads of three, with the ability to revive downcast squadmates.
While Respawn worked on efforts to continue the Titanfall series, the success of Fortnite Battle Royale led them to rework the elements of Titanfall into a battle royale genre, while retaining their own concept in that genre. Respawn asked Electronic Arts to avoid any preliminary marketing prior to the game’s release, releasing it the same day it was announced, to prevent players from developing preconceived notions about the title. A week after its release, Apex Legends has achieved over 25 million downloads and over 2 million simultaneous players, and is considered a strong contender for Fortnite’s current domain inElectronic games industry.
Apex Legends is a battle royale electronic game that takes concepts from the hero shooter, taking place 30 years after the events of Titanfall 2. Players are grouped into trio teams and play with other squads of up to 60 players to scour the game map for weapons, ammunition and other equipment to be the last standing team. Something unique in Apex is that players who are shot down by opponents can be resumed if their teammates take certain actions within a short period of time after the player is killed. Apex features voice chat communication with squadmates and a robust communication approach that allows a player to ping map features such as weapons, opponents, or meeting points if they don’t have a voice chat.
Each player selects a “Legend” character that has unique abilities but can be customized in appearance; Each squad member must choose a unique “Legend”. At launch, the game featured eight Legends: Bloodhound, a Technology Tracker, Gibraltar, an Armored Fortress, Lifeline, a Combat Doctor, Pathfinder, an Advanced Boy Scout, Wraith, an Interdimensional Skimmer, Bangalore, a Professional Soldier, Caustic, a toxic hunter and Mirage, a holographic trickster. Caustic and Mirage must be purchased through the game currency. While Titanfall riders are not present in Apex Legends, some acrobatic features of these riders are mirrored in Apex. including jumps, slides and long-distance jumps.
Apex Legends is free to play and is supported through microtransactions that can be used to buy in-game coins usable for buying new Legend characters, “Apex Packs” (the random cosmetic loot box version that doesn’t have game impact), and battle passes that reward players with new seasonal cosmetic items, completing the game’s challenges.
