SpongeBob SquarePants (known as SpongeBob SquarePants in Brazil and commonly referred to as SpongeBob ) is an American animated series, created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, produced and screened by Nickelodeon. The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his many friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom ( Bikini Bottom ). The series’ popularity has made it a media franchise, as well as Nickelodeon’s most-watched animation/series and the most internationally distributed property by MTV Networks. The series media franchise generated a profit of $13,000,000 in merchandising revenue for Nickelodeon. The series is free for all audiences.
Many of the ideas in the series originated an educational and unpublished comic book titled The Intertidal Zone, which Hillenburg had created in the mid-1980s. He began developing SpongeBob SquarePants in a television series in 1996 after the cancellation of Rocko’s Modern Life and contacted Tom Kenny, who with Hillenburg at Rocko’s Modern Life. The animation was originally named SpongeBob and was tentatively titled SpongeBoy Ahoy! These titles have been changed, with the current name of the series being registered.
The pilot episode of the animation premiered at Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999, following the screening of that year’s Kids’ Choice Awards, and officially premiered on July 17. The series has been globally acclaimed since its debut for its simplicity and appeal to all age groups, and has gained tremendous popularity in its second season. The eponymous film, conceived as a feature film animation, was released in theaters on November 19, 2004, and a sequel was released on February 6, 2015. On July 21, 2012, the series was renewed with the broadcast of its ninth season, which began with the episode “Extreme Spots”.
The animation has been nominated for a variety of different awards, including seventeen Annie Award nominations and the Golden Reel Awards (with six and eight wins respectively), fifteen Emmy Awards nominations (with one win), thirteen Kids Choice Awards nominations ( losing only one award) and four BAFTA Children’s nominations (with two wins). In 2011, Spongebob Squarepants – a species described as a mushroom – was named as a tribute to the cartoon’s title character. On June 7, 2016 premiered the music of the same name of the series ( SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical ) at the Oriental Theater in Chicago and production goes to Broadway.in New York in 2017.
